How To Use Nu-Hope Adhesive Ostomy Cement On Your Ostomy Appliance

Keeping your colostomy bag on can be a challenge at times and may require something with a little more tack such as the adhesive cement from Nu-Hope Labs.  This ostomy cement is a natural rubber base, latex free and pressure sensitive adhesive ideal for the application of any type of ostomy pouch (colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy).  Nu-Hope’s adhesive is waterproof and will protect exposed skin from urine or fluids and will remain tacky for days even after being soiled with urine or stool.  Using Nu-Hope’s Adhesive Liquid Waterproof Cement will allow for a better bond to the skin when you are faced with skin oils, scar tissue, poor stoma location, and/or heavy activity.
Application Steps
1. Stir Nu-HopeAdhesive Cement #2400 or #2401 before use.
2. Remove excess Nu-Hope Adhesive from dauber by rolling the dauber against the inside mouth of the bottle. The dauber should look like there is no adhesive on it after rolling.
3. Clean the skin around your stoma with warm water only. Use adhesive on healthy skin only. Do not use on broken skin.
4.    Apply a very thin film of Nu-Hope Adhesive starting at the base of the stoma. Circle around until the skin area that needs extra adhesion has been coated and appears to have a sheen.  It should not look gummy.  Any blobs of adhesive could cause skin irritation. Do not apply twice - thick applications can take hours to dry and could cause irritation.
5. Dry for 3-5 minutes. A hair dryer on a cool setting is helpful. Any ostomy spillage can be cleansed with a paper towel. To clean, use a light brushing stroke. Do not press.  The skin will remain tacky after lightly cleansed.
6. Apply your ostomy pouch.

Helpful Hints When Using Nu-Hope Adhesive Cement For Ostomy Appliances
  • Do not use soaps that contain oils, lanolin, or creams because they may leave a residue on the skin.
  • Do not apply skin prep, cream, ointment, or pwoder unless advised to do so by your ostomy nurse.
  • For oily skin, 70% isopropyl alcohol may be used to clean off skin oil.
  • Apply only one application of adhesive. Thick applications of adhesive will take hours to dry thoroughly and can result in skin irritation.
  • Do not apply adhesive to a new pouch as the resulting thick layer can take 24 hours to dry.
  • Any adhesive that is applied beyond the pouch seal may be dusted with powder or covered with tape to stop the tack.
  • Choose a quiet time to change the pouch.
    • Urostomy: best to change on arising before any beverage consumption. Have plenty of absorbent wicks to place over stoma during pouch change.
    • Fecal Ostomy: best to change before eating & drinking or two hours after a meal.

Resveratrol Might Prove To Be Helpful In Fight Against Alzheimers

A new government sponsored study will examine whether or not resveratrol can alter or delay the destruction of the brain in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.  5.3 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer's, a fatal illness that has no treatment or cure.  Participants of the study will receive either a placebo or capsules of pure resveratrol.   Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes, tomatoes, dark chocolate and nuts. Studies on non-humans have shown it activates a gene that protects the body and brain from aging. Read the complete details of this study and a highlight of one of its participants featured in USA TODAY.

How to Use Coloplast's Filtrodor Ostomy Pouch Filters

Coloplast Filtrodor® Ostomy Pouch Filter

The Filtrodor ® Pouch Filter is a charcoal pouch filter that adheres to an ostomy pouch for added protection against ostomy-related odors. It simply provides a vent for flatus as it is produced so that the ostomy pouch doesn't balloon up.  The filters are easy to apply and remove and work on any ostomy pouch.

Instructions for Use
  1. Remove Filtrodor from the sheet inside the packaging.
  2. Place Filtroodor ostomy pouch filter carefully in the outside upper corner of the ostomy bag. Press firmly to ensure complete adhesion.
  3. Use the enclosed pin for punching a hole in the bag through the center hole of the filter. Be careful not to punch through both layers of the ostomy bag. This is avoided by keeping surfaces separated. Insert finger into appliance through the stoma hole to separate inner bag surfaces under filter placement area.
Important:
  • Number of holes to be punched: The Filtrodor ostomy pouch filters enable you to regulate the quantity of intestinal gas escaping from the ostomy pouch. Start by punching only 1 hole by use of the enclosed pin. If a large quantity of gas still remains in the bag then punch 2 holes in the next bag. It is possible that your flatus production rate makes it necessary for you to punch more than 2 holes in the bag. After some practice you will easily find out how many holes are required to meet your individual need.
  • Like most ostomy supplies, do not re-use Filtrodor pouch filters.

How To Apply Stomahesive Paste To The Skin

Stomahesive Paste can also be applied to the skin around your stoma.  To do so simply prepare the skin as you would normally when putting on your ostomy appliance.  Apply enough paste on the skin to cover exposed skin between the skin barrier and the stoma.  To fill a crevice and create a level pouching surface, apply Stomahesive Paste on the uneven surface, scare or crevice.  Wet a finger and then you can manipulate the paste to better smooth it out.  The water will keep it from sticking to your fingers.  Then apply your ostomy skin barrier over the stoma and apply pressure over the barrier around the stoma.  Pressure will also cause Stomahesive paste to rise up around the stoma for an additional seal.

Stomahesive® Paste - How To Apply It To An Ostomy Skin Barrier

Stomahesive paste by ConvaTec is a very common ostomy accessory.  It is an excellent item to use despite what kind of ostomy you have because it will help ensure a good fit as well as protect the skin around your stoma. You can apply Stomahesive Paste to the skin or skin barrier.
Application of Stomahesive Paste to a skin barrier or wafer is easy.  It does not matter if the wafer is pre-cut or cut-to-fit.  After preparing the wafer for use, apply a small line of paste on the back of the skin barrier around the opening on the adhesive side of the barrier.  Don't spread the paste and don't apply it to the outer rim of the barrier.  Then center the skin barrier/wafer over the stoma and gently apply pressure over the barrier to ensure a good seal.  The pressure will distribute the Stomahesive paste under the skin barrier as well as rise around the stoma creating a great seal.

NEW AQUACEL® Ag Burn Dressing Introduced by ConvaTec

Below is the press release from ConvaTec announcing the launch of this new wound dressing.

ConvaTec Introduces AQUACEL® Ag Burn Dressing With Hydrofiber® Technology for the Management of Partial Thickness Burns
Posted from a ConvaTec press release dated 2/09/12
SKILLMAN, N.J., Feb. 9, 2012 -- ConvaTec, a world-leading developer and marketer of innovative medical technologies for community and hospital care, today announced the introduction of AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing, a new wound dressing for the management of partial thickness burns (PTBs) and donor sites. AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing incorporates the company's proprietary Hydrofiber® Technology, which has been shown in an in-vitro study to lock in fluid and trap bacteria[1] and to contour closely to uneven wound surfaces.[2]
AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing, for PTBs, can be left in place for up to 21 days, helping to reduce the need for painful dressing changes and the risk of exposure to pathogens in the atmosphere.[3],[4] In current common practice, patients with PTBs must often undergo painful dressing changes as frequently as twice daily, causing often severe discomfort and exposing the wound surface to potential infection from a range of pathogens.  "AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing represents a significant advance in the management of partial thickness burns," said Kevin N. Foster, M.D. "A dressing that can remain in place for up to 21 days can help to reduce the need for multiple dressing changes, potentially reducing the risk of infection and trauma to the wound and the patient."
In addition to flat dressings, the line of AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressings feature a glove for use specifically in PTBs to hands, where a large number of burn injuries occur. The gloves come in a range of sizes from child to adult. Flat and glove dressings are reinforced with Nylon stitching to offer patients maximum flexibility and range of motion. Enhanced flexibility and mobility for burn patients is especially important to ensure that the wound heals properly and prevents contracture.
AQUACEL® Ag dressing incorporates the antimicrobial action of silver, proven to kill a broad spectrum of pathogens[5]*, including MRSA, VRE, S. aureus, P.aeruginosa, C. krusei, and B. fragilis. AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing** has been shown to provide activity against antimicrobial resistant bacteria and potentially reduce the risk of infection.[6]* AQUACEL® BURN dressing is also available, a non-silver version of the wound dressing.  The dressings will self-detach as the burn heals and inflict less trauma to the wound bed and patient. Both dressings absorb and hold exudate and harmful bacteria that can prevent healing or increase the risk of infection.[7],[8] *
AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing is introduced today during Burn Awareness Week – a united effort to educate communities across the U.S. about burn awareness and prevention.
AQUACEL® Ag BURN dressing has been tested in both flat and glove forms during clinical studies in both the U.S. and in Europe. In each case, results showed positive advantages related to patient pain at rest, during movement and ease of use.[9],[10]
Advanced Wound Dressings with Hydrofiber® Technology from ConvaTec
ConvaTec dressings with Hydrofiber® Technology gel on contact with fluid, providing clinicians and patients with substantial wound care benefits. This unique gelling action enables the dressings to lock in exudate and its harmful components[3],[11],[12] * and contour closely to the wound bed,[4]* in response to changing wound conditions. AQUACEL® Ag dressings are soft, absorbent non-woven wound dressings based on Hydrofiber® Technology.

Removing Stomahesive® Paste - A How To Guide

Stomahesive Paste is not a glue or adhesive, but a filler or caulking agent to smooth the area of skin around your stoma to create a flat surface for the ostomy appliance.  It does contain alcohol so it may sting if your skin if it contacts an open wound or skin ulcer.  Stomahesive Paste is one of the most popular ostomy accessories we sell and it works great so long as you know how to remove it!

The removal process is simple and easy.  Just remove the ostomy skin barrier by supporting the skin with one hand and gently peel the skin barrier away from your skin.  Adhesive remover wipes such as AllKare Adhesive Remover Wipes or Smith & Nephew Uni-Solve Wipes are commonly used.  If you don't get all of the Stomahesive Paste removed, used warm water and a soft cloth get the excess.  It isn't necessary to remove all of the paste before a new application of an ostomy appliance. It is better just to leave it than to irritate the skin with scrubbing.

What is Stomahesive® Paste and Why Is Ostomy Paste Something Ostomates Should Consider Using?

Stomahesive® Paste works with the ostomy skin barrier to protect the skin around the stoma.  Stomahesive® is not a glue or adhesive, but a filler or caulking agent to fill crevices and grooves used to fill uneven areas around the stoma to seal the ostomy appliance.  Stomahesive paste can be used by all types of ostomies (colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies).  It helps you improve ostomy pouch wear time.  Do not apply Stomahesive paste to an open wound or skin ulcer as it contains alcohol.

Why use ostomy paste?
By properly applying Stomahesive paste skin barrier wear time is increased by creating a flat surface for the ostomy pouch and preventing leakage under the skin barrier. There are several pastes to choose from that are very similar to Stomahesive paste such as: Hollister's Adapt Paste, and Coloplast's Ostomy Paste.  They all contain alcohol and so they may sting on irritated skin.
