How To Use ParSORB Absorbent Cyrstals With An Ileostomy Pouch

People with a colostomy and especially an ileostomy will experience loose or liquid stool just like others might with diarrhea.  For ostomates it's common and must be managed if only to prevent serious skin irritation. This is important to adress when you wear an ostomy pouch for several reasons:
  1. Sloshing in pouch
  2. Potential for a really messy leak
  3. Skin irritation if the output contacts peristomal area
An easy fix to the sloshing and containment of this liquid mess is with ParSORB Absorbent Crystals!  An alternate to ParSORB gel packets, a long time favorite because of the dissolvable film package, ParSORB crystals comes with a measured scoop (with long handle) to easily add a measured amount inside the ileostomy/colostomy bag.
Using ParSORB Crystals is easy
  1. Empty ostomy pouch and seal tail of pouch
  2. Add one or two scoops inside the ostomy pouch (using the scoop provided inside the jar)
  3. As pouch begins to fill, the ParSORB Crystals will turn any liquid into a gel that will remain at the bottom of the ostomy pouch and without sloshing and away from the peristomal skin.
That's all there is!  Easy to use and affordable!  Try ParSORB Absorbent Crystals today if you have difficult to manage ostomy output.

How To Use NO-STING SKIN-PREP™ Spray For Sensitive Skin Around Wounds and Stomas

Smith & Nephew recently introduced a new "no sting" product for sensitive skin in spray form.  To accompany the No-Sting Skin Prep Wipes, they have also introduced the No-Sting Skin Prep Spray in a 28 mL pump spray bottle.  The formula protects skin from the effects of incontinence and friction, is quick drying and will last up to four days.  Commonly used to protect skin from urinary/fecal incontinence, bodily fluids, adhesive trauma, and frictional forces, this will likely be a very popular ostomy and wound care accessory.  Comments from the Smith & Nephew press release below describe clinical use of it.

Heidi Hogue, RN, BScN, Director of the Wound Healing Institute of Southeast Arkansas said, "I've been using the NO-STING SKIN-PREP Spray, and the product has exceeded my expectations. I've seen the product perform well when used with Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. I also use it around the periwound areas of pressure, venous and diabetic foot ulcers. NO-STING SKIN PREP Spray is easy to use and it helps me help my patients by preventing and reducing irritation to the skin, and reducing the risk of skin trauma."

"Our new NO-STING SKIN-PREP Spray enhances patient comfort because it is conformable, protects the skin from incontinence and friction, and won't irritate damaged skin," said Tom Dugan, President of North American Wound Management. "For the caregiver, the fast drying spray offers quick and easy application and long lasting products save time and money. NO-STING SKIN PREP Spray can help protect vulnerable skin, reducing the risk of costly infections. The addition of NO-STING SKIN-PREP Spray to our liquid film-forming dressing line and our broad portfolio of trusted wound care brands reflects our commitment to providing solutions that promote positive patient outcomes and cost effective patient care."

Swimming With An Ostomy

Swimming... Back In The Pool!
Edited by B. Brewer, UOAA Update 7/2012
Swimming is an excellent exercise and activity you can enjoy with family and friends. So, why are so many of us afraid to get back into the water? Here are some of our issues and solutions.
I’m afraid that my pouch will leak or come off while I’m in the pool. This is by far everyone‘s number one concern. The thing to remember is that your pouching system is designed to be leak-free and water-proof, and your wafer adhesive actually gets stronger in water. As long as your seal is strong and intact, strap on your swim fins and jump in. Check out these tips:
    1. Don‘t go swimming immediately after you have put on a new pouching system.
    2. Make sure your pouch is empty.
    3. Picture framing your wafer with water-proof tape isn‘t necessary, but may give you the extra confidence you need.
    4. Avoid wearing pouches with filters in the pool. Water may get into the pouch through the filter.   Filters may become ineffective after they are wet.
I’m concerned that people will be able to see my pouching system under my swimsuit. Dark colored suits with a busy pattern will camouflage your pouch better than light colors like white or yellow, which can become almost transparent when wet. Consider the following tips:
1.      Women, choose a suit with a small, well-placed ruffle or skirt.
2.      Men, choose a swimsuit with a higher cut waist or longer legs. Add a lycra or spandex undergarment. Consider a tank top to cover any scars and/or a waist high stoma placement.
3.      Colostomates who irrigate may wish to wear a smaller, non-drainable pouch.
I’m embarrassed about changing into/out of my swimsuit in the locker room and people noticing my ostomy pouch. If you are a little modest, try to find a spot that is out of the way or a time that it is less crowded. Some tips follow:
1.  You may wish to change and towel off in a convenient bathroom stall.
2.   Put on a dry, oversized shirt as a cover-up while you change.
3.  A dry suit is easier to take off than a wet one. Relax by the side of the pool with a good book or a talkative friend before heading for the locker room.
4.  Wear your swimsuit under a jogging suit/sweat pants and don‘t worry about changing at all.
What about using the hot tub or Jacuzzi? Go ahead. Again, as long as your pouch seal is good and your pouch is empty you should have no problems with your ostomy.
General Tips:
·          Take it slow the first time out. Save those strenuous swims and dives until later.
·          Always leave a little air in pouch, to permit stoma drainage to fall down into the pouch.
·          When sun bathing, take a magazine or book to the beach or pool. Lay it open over your    pouch to protect your pouching system (wafer) from the heat of the sun.
·         Test your pouching system. Fill the bathtub with water and soak for a few minutes.
·         Don‘t talk about your ostomy surgery at the community pool.  If asked, talk in private.

How To Remove Holliser's Adapt Paste From Skin

How to remove Adapt Paste?  The Adapt paste will come off when you remove your ostomy pouch. If you are changing your pouch after a very short time (less than a day) you may see paste residue that
should be gently lifted from the skin. If a small amount of paste residue is still adhered to your skin but it appears clean, you can apply your new pouch over it.  Note: Adapt Paste does contain alcohol which can cause stinging on the sensitive skin area.  An alternative are Adapt Ostomy Rings.
For other ostomy product needs or wound care needs contact Parthenon to save money and get the best service around!

Karaya Gum Powder For Peristomal Skin and Ulcers

What ostomy products contain karaya?  pastes such as Hollister's Karaya Paste 7910, powders such as Parthenon's K-Gum Karaya Powder, skin barriers like Blanchard's Karaya Wafer.

Why use karaya? Karaya has many uses but it's purpose in the ostomy world is for its ability to absorb many times its weight in fluid and its inherent healing qualities.  Karaya powder has demonstrated its ability in helping manage diaper rash too. Pediatr Nurs. 2004 Nov-Dec; 30(6): 467-70 note it as a component of skin care products to treat diaper rash.

What is karaya?  Also known as gum karaya, Karaya gum is a sap collected from a tree that grows in India.  It has many names the most notable one used in ostomy products is Sterculia urens.   Other uses for karaya gum include a bulk forming laxative; thickener in medications, cosmetics, and denture adhesives; and a binder in foods. Karaya gum powder in its purest form is white in color and in powder form.  When wet, it becomes gelatinous.  It is available in rings that can be molded into any desired shape like the ones sold by Blanchard.

Karaya powder is highlighted in the journal article, Karaya For Chronic Skin Ulcers, taken from The American Journal of Nursing, June 1974, Vol. 74, No. 6 by Gladys Wallace and Jean Hayter.  In this article they discuss their use of karaya powder on a patient's excoriated and weeping peristomal skin as well as decubitus ulcers.

Next time you or your patient experience difficult to manage skin redness, weeping, excoriation, consider using Karaya K-Gum powder to clear it up.  It's the purest form available and all natural as well as very inexpensive compared to common wound dressings and other ostomy accessories.

The Colon Club Colondar - Fighting to raise awareness of colorectal cancer

Check out the 2012 Colondar filled with real people fighting and surviving colorectal cancer.  It is an uplifting positive message and is a great thing to support!
It has been featured in the Parthenon ostomy catalog in past years and we hope to introduce the Colondar to more people not familiar with this great effort.

The Parthenon Company is a family owned/operated group serving the ostomy community since 1961.  We are one of the few companies to retain our original ownership and remain small enough to provide superior customer service and large enough to provide the lowest prices on ostomy supplies nationwide.  Parthenon specializes in ostomy products as well as wound care and other specialty medical products.
